Common questions
Does a stairlift attach to the wall or the stairs?
To the stairs. The rail is fixed to the stair treads with small brackets, so walls are not affected. See straight stairlifts.
What happens during a power cut?
Most modern stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries, so they keep working for a number of trips during a power cut.
How narrow can my stairs be?
Many models suit stairs from about 61–70 cm wide. Perch seats can help on narrower stairs. A surveyor will confirm.
How much does a stairlift cost to run?
Electricity is usually a few pounds a year. Budget for an annual service and new batteries every two to four years. See the cost guide.
Can other people still walk up the stairs?
Yes. With the seat, arms and footrest folded there is still room to use the stairs, though it is narrower.
How long does fitting take?
A straight stairlift typically takes two to three hours. A curved one is fitted in a day once the rail has been made.
Is a stairlift safe?
Modern stairlifts include sensors, seat belts, key switches and speed governors. See stairlift safety.
Can I get help paying for a stairlift?
You may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant and VAT relief.
Do you install stairlifts?
No. Stairlift Advice UK is an independent advice website. We do not sell, install or quote for stairlifts.
