Stairlift Repairs, Servicing & Common Fault Troubleshooting

Most stairlifts need a professional service once a year and new batteries every two to four years. Many common faults — a lift that won't move or keeps beeping — have simple causes you can check safely before calling an engineer.

Common faults and simple checks

The lift won't move

  • Is the key switch on?
  • Is the seat swivelled fully back to the travel position?
  • Is the seat belt fastened (on some models)?
  • Is anything pressing on a footrest or carriage sensor?
  • Is the lift parked on its charging point?

Continuous beeping

Usually means the lift is not charging — often because it has stopped just off a charging point, or the plug or socket has been switched off. Move it to the end of the rail and check the socket.

Error codes

Many lifts show a number or letter code on a small display. Your user manual lists them. If a code persists after the checks above, call your service provider and tell them the code.

Never try to open covers or carry out electrical repairs yourself.

What breakdown cover should include

  • Annual service.
  • Unlimited or a stated number of call-outs.
  • Parts and labour (check whether batteries are excluded).
  • A stated response time.
  • Out-of-hours and weekend cover, if you need it.

Servicing and repairs for an eligible user are also zero-rated for VAT. See also stairlift safety features.
